[gui-talk] IE 8: I installed, but have questions now

Lloyd,

I did not get any dialogues offering me options of the sort you mention
during the install. Not that I noticed, anyway. So that remains mysterious
to me. As for Microsoft switching my default search engine, I don't know. I
still use Google as my home page, and that hasn't been altered without my
knowing it. Let me go to any old Web site, press Control E, and see if
Google still comes up as the search engine for that procedure, too. Hold on.

Nope. Google's still the search engine that comes up when I press Control E.
So I don't think MS messed around with my preferences in any way at all as I
installed IE 8 over IE 7. I've heard people talk about that sort of thing
happening to them, but this isn't my fate, so that has nothing to do with
what was bothering me. Which seems to be over, now that I clicked on that
option to forget about that add-on when launching IE. The other messages
aren't coming up.

Whatever. I've invested enough brain power in this, and you have, too. I
hope you go on using Firefox with pleasure, and I'll stick with IE and hope
it behaves normally from now on. The commands, now that I look around it,
seem to really be about the same as IE7, which was indeed a change from the
previous version, because of tab browsing and a couple of other changes. But
I believe IE 8 is noteworthy for other improvements, having to do with
security and page loading or something like that. Nothing an end user like
me needs to fret about or learn anything new for.

Thanks for the moral support and the ideas,
joel

I just went through the IE8 setup. I hadn't gotten around to doing it until
now.

I have some DVD-related software on my Dell computer from Sonic Solutions,
and got the same complaints about Drive Letter Access, a program which can
treat your DVD drive like a conventional drive in Windows Explorer. I also
told IE not to bother running the add-in instead of trying to find an
update.

There were several more screens of questions for installation, and I chose
the Custom rather than the Express so I would know what Microsoft was doing
to my browser. I haven't used IE8 enough to know whether I made good
choices. Someone on the Window-Eyes list in the past day noted that IE
tries to set Bing as your default search provider, which you probably would
get to with ctrl-E. It may be worth looking through this pile of options at
some point, but perhaps you don't need to do it today.

Enjoy!
