The below research participant solicitation is being provided for informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.

Research Title: Digital, Multimodal Charts and Data Visualizations

Being conducted by: Saint Louis University

Purpose of the Study

Our study investigates 2 different ways to improve access to digital charts, graphs, and data visualizations. We have prepared 2 touchscreen-based investigations (one utilizing different vibrations and sounds on a tablet, the other utilizing vibrations, sounds, and a peripheral wearable device with the tablet). We hope to learn more about the efficacy of presenting graphics in these different ways, as well as understand user preference for the different access modes and take improvements to the systems.

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

Participants may participate in one or both study sessions (touchscreen graphs only; touchscreen graphs with wearable device). Each session will take approximately 60 minutes. During each session, participants will interact with digital graphs (line graphs, scatter plots, bar charts, etc.) on a touchscreen using either vibrations/audio or vibrations/audio/wearable device. They will be asked to answer questions related to the content of the graph, their understanding of the graph, as well as questions related to their experience using either system.

Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, Participants are compensated with a $50 gift card for participating in each study.

Link or Instructions for Participants to Enter the Study

If you are attending the 2026 NFB National Convention in-person and are interested in participating or finding out more about one or both study sessions, please email chromelab at slu.edu <mailto:chromelab at slu.edu> . We have time slots available on July 3 and 4. We will reach out to you to schedule a time for you to complete our studies at the convention.
