The documents I've been trying to access are varied in nature, but I guess I did know that the graphic images wouldn't be somehow read.  I just thought that 9 and above had a method of converting to some sort of readable text.

My dream technology.  (grin.)

Two things -- 9 isn't the latest release there is a 10, and if it 
says "empty document" it means there is no text, it is a graphic -- 
an image of a page.
