2011 Advocacy Day is a Success Thanks to You!

Dear Transportation Advocacy Day attendees,

Thank you for all of your hard work this year! Thanks to your activisim we
are happy to report we had a very high level of success for our 2011
Transportation Advocacy Day Priorities! Here is the run down. Thank you for
coming to our 2011 Advcocacy Day and helping bring more transportation
chocies to Washingtonians.

Traffic School

Traffic Schools will soon be teaching drivers how to safely interact with
bicyclists and pedestrians. Governor Chris Gregoire signed House

2BWr%2FuhpdYK44> Bill 1129 into law on Monday, April 11, and the bill will
take effect on July 22, 2011. Transportation Advocacy Day partner, the
Bicycle Alliance of Washington (BAW) will be contacting all traffic schools
and providing them with the approved curriculum. The BAW will also do follow
up to ensure that traffic schools are using the curriculum.

Transit Funding Bill Passes but Funding Still on the Ropes

In other news, the emergency local transit funding bill Senate
<http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=6kxN6TzkCdFhXiMC8M6bw
Wr%2FuhpdYK44> Bill 5457 passed out of the Legislature on April 22nd and was
signed by the Governor. Originally this bill would have given temporary
funding to address the bus cuts crises in Pierce, King, and Snohomish
Counties. Unfortunately, in the end it only applied to King County, but we
are still happy to see the Legislature give the King County Council options
other than cutting up to 22% of our state's largest transit system. This
bill does not solve the long term problem, is a temporary funding source,
and does not help agencies outside of King County. We'll be working hard
with the Legislature again next year to find long-term sustainable funding
for all of our transit agencies in future years.

Complete Streets Passes!

We passed the complete streets bill with the help of our sponsor Rep. Jim
Moeller and many other legislative supporters. House

Wr%2FuhpdYK44> Bill 1071 will set up a framework for a complete streets
grant program in Washington State and direct WSDOT to apply complete streets
principals to their projects inside of cities.

Vulnerable Users Passes

The Vulnerable

GhPJ2r%2FuhpdYK44> Users bill cleared the House and Senate, and was signed
by the Governor. The bill, the top priority for the Cascade Bike Club and
in important step forward to make our roads safer for all users.
