Research Title: Blind and Low Vision Students’ School Experiences

 

Being conducted by: Harvard University

 

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this research is to understand what factors contribute to blind and low vision children’s social and emotional development as they go through their schooling. Topics like self-esteem, how blind/low vision children think about themselves, peer relationships, and how others perceive the blind/low vision children will be examined. To inform what factors are contributing to blind/low vision children’s social and emotional development, this study will interview blind/low vision children, one of the child’s parents/caregivers as well as blindness professionals who work with the blind/low vision children. These interviews will be conducted nation-wide. 

 

 

 

The specific questions this study will answer are: 

 

1.           How do blind/low vision children understand their social and emotional development?  What contributing factors do they name?  How do parents and the professionals for these children understand the children’s social and emotional development?  What contributing factors do they articulate?

 

2.           How are blind children’s social and emotional development perceived to be different from their sighted peers, and in what ways do children, parents, and professionals conceptualize areas that need more support for blind/low vision children’s social and emotional development? What challenges are they noticing? What capacities, supports, and possibilities are they perceiving? and what do they think would help blind/low vision children in this?

 

3.           How do the interactions blind/low vision children have with their parents and professionals communicate certain messages to blind/low vision children about their abilities, self-image, and social and emotional development?

 

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study 

Participants will be interviewed with Semi-structured interviews. Participants will be recruited nation-wide). These interviews can be done in person or via Zoom. The interviews with parents/caregivers of blind children and the interviews of professionals who work with blind/low vision children will take around 90 minutes. Interviews with blind/low vision children will take around 45-60 minutes, and may be broken up into two interviews if that would help the child engage/focus easier. 

 

The themes in the interview guide are, but not limited to, interviewees perceptions of social and emotional experiences (for the blind/low vision child); challenges the blind/low vision child has faced socially and emotionally; challenges parents and professionals have faced related to social and emotional development for children, what they have tried, and what they think could help social and emotional development in blind/low vision children. Interview audio will be recorded and transcribed. Due to the semi-structured nature of the interviews, follow up questions may be asked as necessary.

 

Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, $40 compensation in the form of an Amazon gift card for completion of adult interviews, $15 compensation in the form of an Amazon gift card for completion of interviews for children
