Research Title: A Phenomenological Study Exploring the Development of
Disability Identity in Adults with Visual Impairments, including
Blindness, from their Lived Experiences during Adolescence in the
Educational Setting

Being conducted by: Pepperdine University

Purpose of the Study

This study will use a qualitative research methodology with a
phenomenological approach to explore the development of disability
identity for adults with visual impairments, including blindness,
reflecting on their lived experiences during adolescence in the
educational setting. From these lived experiences in adolescence, the
researcher hopes to understand the phenomena of developing disability
identity. The results from the study will be used to educate
educators and others who work in the field of visual impairment,
including blindness, about the development of disability identity in
the educational setting during adolescence.

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

Participation in this study will require approximately 30 minutes.
You will be asked to complete a one-on-one semi-structured interview
using a researcher-created interview protocol and a brief
demographics survey. A pseudonym can be chosen and used in place of
your identity for the study. The interviews will take place in person
or online using an accessible virtual meeting platform, such as Zoom,
where the audio and/or video will be recorded and then transcribed
into a written format. The interview will be recorded for
transcribing purposes only, and you will be emailed a copy of your
interview transcript to review for accuracy.
