Jen,

You know, so much of this is guesswork and it really is hard to know what to
do.  Making sure that you have the latest version of outlook is what I think
I would do first.  There could have been a problem that was corrected.  I am
uncertain if trying to go back to an earlier version makes sense because it
might just get updated again depending on the version you have, your
operating systems, and other settings.  I don't remember exactly how the
click-to-run version is updated.

Did you say if you could duplicate the problem you are having without a
screen reader or with another screen reader, like NVDA, running.  If the
problem persists, then it really would seem to be an Outlook problem.  If
not, then the problem would seem to more likely be within JAWS.  If it is
determined to be an Outlook problem, then the delay setting of JAWS
restarting is probably not that important and not worth pursuing.

To change the delay, were you editing the file directly?  If so, you could
try running the editor you are using as administrator.  Another approach
that might work is to make a copy of the JCF file in another folder and then
make the changes and then copy it back to the original folder.  When you
copy it back, you will get the same warning about not having the ability to
do that, but pressing the continue button should allow the copy to complete
where a direct "save" doesn't work.  I think I would try something like 60
seconds rather than 900, though.  There is always a possibility that Outlook
is being held up by JAWS, and restarting JAWS might correct that before
Outlook restarts.  This is only speculation on my part, though, and I don't
know that it will help.  

I don't have much experience using a formula in a view.  If your folders are
very large, trying to get around requiring a formula is worth trying,
though.

Thank you for your message. I would like to answer, suggestion by
suggestion.

1. I went into the default Settings Center (JCF) file in my "Shared
Settings" folder, and the sdelay time for Outlook is "infinite," which means
JAWS will not shut off when Outlook stops responding, which is how I want
it. If I wait, Outlook restarts j goes back to my inbox. I triedto change
the default delay time to longer (900 seconds), but when I tried to save it,
the computer said access was denied.

2. I am using Office 2016 Professional, and it is a click-to-run
installation. Do you think I should revert to last month's version of Office
and see if it fixes my problem? I have also downloaded the Microsoft
Recovery and Support Assistant but not run it yet. The site says it can fix
problems for you, like Outlook not responding; do you think I should run
this program?

3. I have just disabled all my Outlook settings and will let you know what
happens.

4. I have made sure message previewing is off. The folder pane is set to
"normal," and the "preview Pane" is off.

5. With my custom views, I am trying to sort my e-mail in a way easier for
me to understand. Here are my custom views.

Inbox:

no grouping of items

Sort by:

1. From, ascending
2. Subject, ascending.
3. Received, ascending.
4. Formula for "Received" column: Sat 8/26/17 2:26 PM

View for "Sent It4ems" folder:

no grouping of items

Sort By:

1. To, ascending.
2. Subject, ascending.
3. Sent, ascending.
4. Formula for "Sent Items" column: same as for the inbox.

As for your fifth suggestion, I want to save this for the last resort
because I have found the accessibility line unhelpful in the past. I would
like to try reverting to the July version of Office 2016 first if that is
something you think I should do.

I was thinking maybe system restore would have fixed this, but I remembered
personal folders are not affected by System Restore anyway because they fall
under the category of "personal files." Plus, I had so many restore points
that didn't lead anywhere, I disabled System Restore so I could make new
restore points.

The first thing of which to be aware is both JAWS and Outlook have the
capability to restart themselves automatically. More than once, I have found
I thought my system was hung up, only to find I was waiting for JAWS to
restart; sometimes, JAWS restarts because it thinks another program is not
responding and, in the case of Outlook, this can happen if you have large
folders or a slower connection. Remember a slow connection can be at the
other end, and it doesn't mean your connection is slow; if you try just
waiting when this happens and find JAWS restarts, there are ways in the
latest version of JAWS to make the time it waits before restarting
automatically longer.

Second, if you are using Office 365, updates are being made to your software
very often. It is not uncommon for problems to seemingly appear from nowhere
and then sometimes even disappear. The nice thing is we get fixes sooner,
but it also means problems can appear without warning.

The third thing I would suggest is you look at all the various settings in
JAWS for Office 365. Try disabling as many as you don't absolutely need to
be certain they are not causing a problem.

Fourth, if you have any kind of message previewing on, turn that off. There
seem to be two ways that can be on, including Message Preview and "Reading
Pane."

Fifth, think about what it is you are doing with your tailored views. I see
from a later note the "Cleanviews" option may not have solved your problem,
but if it made things somewhat better, there may be things in your views
that make the problem worse. Please understand I'm not saying you shouldn't
be able to do everything you are doing. I'm only looking for ways that may
reduce the problem.

Sixth, and maybe do this sooner than this, contact the Microsoft
accessibility line; they are pretty good. They can connect to your computer
remotely and may be able to see what is happening visually, and there may be
something visually obvious that is not apparent with a screen reader.

Hi everyone,

I've been having a problem with Outlook 2016. I am running Windows 10,
Office and Outlooki 2016 and JAWS 18. This problem started on the 4th. I
started being unable to switch between folders. When I tried to go from the
inbox to, say, "Sent Items," "Contacts," etc, it would crash Outlook. In the
beginning, the problem went away by itself. I have recreated my profile and
account about three times now, and the problem goes away for a while but
comes back shortly thereafter. I tried deleting and recreating my "Outlook"
profile, but this didn't work, either. This problem only started after I
repaired Office 2016 on July 31. Today, I discovered I can press Enter on
the folder I want with JAWS off, and when I turn JAWS back on, I can open
the folder successfully. Has anyone else had this Outlook problem? Is it a
JAWS issue? If you have had this problem before, how did you fix it? I would
greatly appreciate any help or suggestions.
