Denise,

Yes, you can have Word open a blank document as it did in older 
versions, instead of the start screen.

Press alt-F for the File menu (or the backstage view.)

Press T for the Options dialog.

You will be in a list of categories and you will probably be focused on 
the "general" category. This is where you want to be.

Press shift+tab a few times and you will encounter a checkbox with the 
prompt of "show the start screen when this application starts." Press 
the spacebar to uncheck this box, followed by enter to close the Options 
dialog.

Voila! Your problem should be fixed.
