[gui-talk] would like some help after disconnecting from cableTV

I heard a commercial the other day that sounds like ATT Uverse has cut the
cord. I don't know if this is true. When I was living with my mom in
Chicago, we had uverse and I had them for a short time in Orange, CA in late
2009 and early 2010 before I had to leave the place where I was living. I
really liked uverse. They seem to have a lot of good channels.
Unfortunately, as many of you have read from me in the past, we only have
Charter cable up here in the high desert of Southern California. Although we
get a lot of channels, the problems I have had with the internet until
recently, make me still not really like using this company.

The problem with these proprietary boxes is that they cannot receive most
cable stations and certainly no over-the-air stations. And except for the
Apple TV box, they are not accessible. And while the apple box may itself
be accessible thanks to built-in Voice Over, most of the streaming video
does not have described audio, so as far as I'm concerned, it's a big fat
waste of money. I'm mostly interested in news and information, and none of
these boxes lets you stream the dozens of news, educational and
informational channels available on cable.
