You can disable the touchpad on most laptops by right clicking its icon
in the system tray and looking for a "disable" option.

Hi Joel -- when I'm on a laptop, I sometimes get whisked away to the
desktop
because of my sleeve brushing against the mouse pad below the keyboard.
There's nothing I can do except try to keep my arms away from that area
and
alt+taab back into my app. Sorry I'm not much help. It only happens on
laptops and I have never seen it on a desktop, so I assume I am right
that
it is that mouse pad on the laptop.
Good luck.

I'm using a laptop Win XP Home. It's begun to skip from one program to
another, usually while I'm typing in Worde or OE, but not exclusively.
Three
times, already, I've a heard a bing! and had to alt tab back into this
message. Where have I been taken? To the inbox, to the desktop, to
customize Word.

Any helpappreciated.
Joel
