You can disable them permanently so you have control over when they are
inserted.

1. Open the Tools menu and press ENTER on "Autocorrect"
2. Navigate to the "Autoformat as you Type" property sheet
3. On this property sheet, disable the checkboxes labeled, "Automatic
Numbered Lists" and "Automatic Bulleted Lists"
4. Save your changes and exit the dialog.

You now have control over when bullets and numbers are used in your
documents.

I'm going from memory here, but I believe you can go to the Format
menu, then arrow down to Bullets and Numbering, then once in that
dialog Control Tab until you get to the numbering tab and use the
arrows to find and select the None button. I've had to do this several
times to turn numbering completely off, but it does work.
