Hold down the play button until you hear a beep and it says bookshelf, then the forward and back button to navigate between books, and when you hear the title of the one you want then hit the play button again and it will start to play.

I have the latest firmware and when I have three books on the cartridge it
states I have three books but seems that the timing on pressing the buttons
is so touchy that I got it to list the three book titles one time out of a
dozen tries. All the other times it just advanced on the current book.

I don't know if you have an Advanced Player or the basic one. This may work
for both. Hold down the PLAY Key for two seconds and you'll be in the
bookshelf. Use the left and right menu keys to select the book; then press
play again.

Each book should be in its own folder under the root.
