You know, some weeks ago there was a story on 60 Minutes (on CBS) about
research into determining not just what people see, but what they are
thinking by analyzing brain activity. After demonstrating with a volunteer,
they launched into the obvious legal/ethical ramifications of such a
capability. It was interesting, but also unsettling.
As for reading what a person sees, this is relatively easy as the image from
the retina on the visual cortex looks a lot like an inverted image of what
the subject is looking at. Try adding to that the ability of deciphering
people's memories.
(Twilight zone music...)
Interesting.

FYI
Seems like this may eventually be a tiny part in eventually developing
artificial vision.

Cracking The Brain's Numerical
Code: Researchers Can Tell What
Number A Person Has Seen
ScienceDaily Sept. 25, 2009
*************************
By carefully observing and
analyzing the pattern of activity in
the brain, researchers have found
that they can tell what number a
person has just seen, or how many
dots a person has been presented
with. These findings confirm the
notion that numbers are encoded in
the brain via detailed and specific
activity...
