Hello,

My friend Jeff Bigham is a Computer Scientist who has a keen interest in
creating things that increase accessibility for folks who are blind or visually
impaired.

He is currently investigating ways to leverage an accessible camera phone that
would allow us to take a picture of something, and be able to ask a live person
questions about it. He would like to get some initial thoughts and input into
his idea from us, potential end-users

If you have a couple of minutes and would be willing to complete a brief online
survey, read on passed my signature block for further details.

Thanks,
Jennison

Hi Jennison,

I'm conducting a survey to help brainstorm uses for a new project that
I'm working on.
http://www.cs.rochester.edu/u/jbigham/survey.php

The service that I'm envisioning uses an accessible camera-phone to
let folks with visual impairments take pictures of their surroundings
and then ask a remote person a question about the photo. The remote
person would send an answer back to the phone in nearly realtime (less
than 30 seconds). Think something like the kNFB Reader but with a
human in the loop so you could ask arbitrary questions about the
pictures you take. The service would be either free or inexpensive.

My survey asks people to brainstorm potential uses of such a system.
I thought you might have some ideas:

Please see the full announcement included below and feel free to
forward this to anyone else that you think might like to contribute.

Thanks!
Jeff

Study Title

Brainstorming Uses for Camera-Phone Question Answering Service
Principal Investigator

Jeffrey P. Bigham, Ph.D.

This form describes a research study that Jeffrey P. Bigham, principal
investigator from the University of Rochester, is conducting in order
to brainstorm potential uses of a camera-phone question answering
service designed to assist people with visual impairments with
everyday visual tasks.

The study involves an online survey that will take approximately
fifteen minutes. The survey contains some personal questions about
you. We would like you to complete the whole survey, but you may skip
any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Participant
responses will be kept confidential. Only the investigators will have
access to your individual responses. Only summarized data will be
presented at meetings or in any publications.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. You are free
not to participate or to withdraw at any time, for whatever reason.
