I only had to pay $20 for this card reader and I believe it reads three
types of cards.  I remember when floppies were so cool with a storage
capacity of two CD's.  Even though they weren't very dependable I thought
they were the answer to portable storage.  I guess Bill Gates once said he
couldn't see why anyone would ever need more than 700MB of storage capacity.
What a hoot!  He gets asked about that statement every once in a while.

Well, I would say there are several answers here -- first, anything 
extra drives up the cost of a device, and PC's are quite price 
sensitive.  Secondly there are at least five or six types of memory 
cards, memory sticks and such, which ones do you support?  Also they 
come and go, to a certain extent, and every now and then a new one 
comes along, or the standards for an old one are upgraded to support 
more capacity, any of which may make something not work.  So, it is 
cheaper and easier to leave their interface to third parties 
developing devices you plug into a PC via a standard port.

Ports change too (smile,) but not as quickly.  Fifteen years ago we 
had serial and parallel and they are little used these days.
