If you aren't already aware, Comcast has recently expanded its low-income
?Internet Essentials? program.  There is now more criteria which will expand
eligibility for this low-cost service to more people stuck in the digital
divide.  This will allow affordable in-home internet service which will free
more people from having to use public Wifi hotspots to get internet access.

Summary of the Internet Essentials program is as follows:

 

How to Qualify:

 

 

To qualify, your household must:

 

Be in a Comcast serviceable area.

 

Receive a state and/or federal assistance program noted below.

 

Not have any level of Xfinity Internet service now or within the last 90
days.

 

Not have an outstanding Comcast balance that is less than one year old.

 

Including meeting all of the criteria noted above, your household must also
be eligible for or receive at least one of the following public assistance
programs:

 

Medicaid: Federal Healthcare Program (Such as the Oregon Health Plan).

 

NSLP: National School Lunch Program.

 

SNAP: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. (Formally known as food
stamps)

 

Housing: public housing assistance including HUD, Section 8, Housing Choice
Vouchers, etc.

 

TANF: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

 

SSI: Supplemental Security Income.

 

LIHEAP: Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

 

Federal Pell Grant: Community college financial aid (CO and IL only).

 

WIC: Women, Infants, and Children.

 

VA: Veterans Pension eligibility determination letter from the Veterans
Administration.

 

Tribal Assistance program including TTANF, FDPIR.

Under this new expansion, internet access eligibility will extend to an
additional 3 million low-income Americans. According to the U.S. Census,
people living in high-poverty cities are 10 times less likely to have
broadband at home than those in higher-earning communities. Comcast has
already connected 52,000 households in Oregon and SW Washington.
