[nfbwatlk] Another device to help us "see"

Amen.

I suspect that, aside from thinking we, the blind, want what *they* think
they'd want were they blind, part of the problem lies in their designing
devices that try to mimmick aspects of sight rather than devices that merely
provide information to us when we want, where we want and in what form we
want. But underlying even this is a prejudice -- yes, prejudice -- that we
can't be expected to know what we want and even if we *do* state what we
want, it is suspect because the blind are inherently inferior, at least by
their lights.

Now they'd never admit it.

Mike

Well, these people keep coming up with ways to "Help" us. If they really
want to do something constructive, why don't they involve the blind and find
out what we really want instead of wasting good money on stupid things that,
A, we'd never use, and B, would be too expensive to buy if we did want them,
and C, don't make any sense?

Hi,
I've heard of this device. It's been around for a while. Roger Behm of WI,
has used it. But PURRsonally, I think it is a little gross to use our tongue
for getting around. I realize that the tongue is sensitive and there are a
lot of nerves there but there's also saliva, eeww. I'd rather use my ears,
or hands; something less germy.
Thanks
Lauren

Here is an article from the June 18 issue of the Washington Post. I missed
it on Newsline but saw a Facebook post about it today from an NFB member. I
groaned at the time. Then I saw a KIN5 news story about it tonight. Of
course they pretty much read the story word for word. I will call them
tomorrow. I would appreciate your thoughts about what I might say and how
you all feel about this.
