Yes to the last question: NVDA can be shut off. It does a pretty good job
although takes a bit of getting used to in order to work with Microsoft
Office products.

Kaye, would they have towers? We're looking at getting a computer that we
could share.  I'm assuming, just like JAWS, you can shut off the NVDA so
that a sighted person could use the computer too? 
Never used that screen reader before.  Is it hard to learn?
