[nfbwatlk] Thunderbirds

The Portland Winterhawks and the Spokane Chiefs play this evening. Think the
Winterhawks beat them last evening. I suspect whoever wins this series will
play Kelowna.

There are five Western Hockey League teams in Washington and Oregon. The
Western Hockey League is for players aged sixteen to twenty. In Canada, at
least, it's one of the major sources of NHL players. Colleges and
universities are developing much stronger hockey programs these days, so the
traditional route of playing Junior Hockey is less important than it once
was.

The five U.S. teams are Seattle, Everett, Spokane, Tri Cities, and Portland.
This level of hockey is a really big deal here; our arena seats sixty-five
hundred people and everyone talks about how fickle the fans have become if
the crowd is less than four thousand. )This is a city of 100,000. Four to
six thousand fans showing up per game represents a big percentage of the
population.) All the games are broadcast live and streamed over the
internet.

I became a hockey fan in the grim days before I discovered mlb.com. Now I
drive my husband crazy with my fandom all year!

I didn't know we had a hockey team around here. Please tell me more, even
if the season is nearly over, or over, not sure.

Is there a team web site?

I'm stretching list rules a tad by discussing hockey. I realize that the
Seattle Thunderbirds aren't the Mariners.

The T-birds put in such an amazing performance in the Western Hockey League
playoffs that I really wanted to acknowledge them, especially since the team
they nearly knocked out is my beloved Kelowna Rockets. Seven games, five
going to overtime! I don't have a heart condition, but if there's another
series like that one, I'll be looking for a low cost pharmacy and stocking
up on heart medicine!
