The U.S. Department of Education today announced the award of more than $1 million in grants to four schools in Indiana, Texas, Illinois, and Washington to help them train and find jobs for realtime writers. The Department's Training for Realtime Writers (TRTW) program provides grants to assist court reporting and captioning programs with recruiting and training realtime writers.
"These grants will fill a void in training and job placement for realtime writers," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "Whether its court reporting or closed captioning for television, these grants will help train and employ people who provide essential services to all of us, especially to those who may have a disability."

The grant recipients include:

* College of Court Reporting, Hobart Ind., $300,000

* San Antonio College, San Antonio, Texas $214,878

* MacCormac College, Chicago, Ill., $295,850

* Green River Community College, Auburn, Wash. $298,141

The College of Court Reporting (CCR) program seeks to improve mentoring and coaching of its students by analyzing feedback and student progression rates of students participating in its Professional Mentor Program. CCR will increase the number of English, Spanish, and Americans who receive training in realtime writing, through competitive scholarships for education-related expenses.

San Antonio College will use grant funds to expand and improve its training program for realtime captioners. Activities include partnering with industry and school districts to improve captioning courses and to increase enrollment, and buying equipment and software to establish a realtime captioning laboratory.

MacCormac College's grant will enable it to provide integrated and comprehensive support services, including workshops and online mentoring. The grant will also allow MacCormac to develop Computer Assisted Realtime Translation, and Broadcast Captioning certificates.

The Green River Community College use the grant to enhance recruitment and support its Computer Reporting Technologies program, which offers degrees in realtime judicial reporting and broadcast captioning, as well as certificate programs in scopist/text entry and retraining for court reporters transitioning to captioning careers.

The Training for Realtime Writers program is funded through the Department's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.
