I use a 8gb thumb drive (Sanddisk) and it works just fine I had another one
just like it but it worked with a lot of manageable glitches.

There are 2-gig cartridges also; I have three of them I bought from the
American Printing House for the Blind last year.

The only cartridges I've heard about are 1 gig . The smallest flash drive
I've seen lately is 2 gigs. Cartridges cost about fourteen or fifteen
dollars.  My understanding is that the flash drives don't hurt the playerS;
they just don't work well sometimes. I'm going on the theory that if it
ain't broke, don't fix it. For now, I'll keep my four gig flash drive right
in my player where it is, except for the time necessary to plug it in and
load more books.

I have had a few glitches with the thumb drive and the digital player but
not many. I enjoy being able to put 100 plus books on one thumb drive and
having multiple options available. Does anyone know how much data the blank
cartridges will hold?

Hello List Members,

While some patrons have found thumb drives that do work with their NLS
digital players, NLS does not recommend their use since their performance
can be unpredictable, and we have no control over the specifications used in
the manufacturing of these drives. We frequently hear from frustrated
readers who, when trying to use flash drives, have received error messages
such as "No book available" and "Cartridge error." Others hear introductory
material and then "End of book." We urge anyone with an NLS digital player
who intends to download books from the BARD site to purchase blank
cartridges designed specifically to be used with the NLS player. Of course,
if you plan only to use NLS books supplied on cartridge through the mail,
there is no need to purchase blank cartridges.

Downloading books to a cartridge entails essentially the same process as
downloading to a flash drive; both are treated as external drives by your
computer. Your local or regional NLS-affiliated library is available to
answer any questions you may have about your free NLS player and downloading
content to it using a cartridge.

We hope you find these postings helpful, and we send you all best wishes for
many hours of reading pleasure.
