Announcing!!

Pacific & NorthWest Consortium for Vision Education

(PNWCVE)

Portland State University is pleased to announce the establishment of
the Pacific & NorthWest Consortium for Vision Education. The consortium
is comprised of five states with the primary purpose of insuring that
member states have a continued priority access to a teacher preparation
program for students with visual impairments.

With thanks to collaborative efforts in the state of Washington
(WSDS,OSPI, Ed Reform Committee, and WSSB); Washington is now a full
member of the consortium.

Membership benefits include: Priority admission for qualified teacher
candidates; priority grant and scholarship funding for teacher
candidates; Oregon resident tuition rates; job clearinghouse for LEAs;
job placement assistance; subsidized workshops; and faculty travel to
support students in member states.

With the development of the consortium, Portland State University now
has the ability to develop an Orientation and Mobility program;
hopefully beginning in the summer of 2011. The consortium is sponsoring
an in-service workshop on October 8 & 9 for BookPort and Braille Plus.
And finally, PSU has admitted 5 Washington teacher candidates for the
2010 cohort beginning this summer, each of whom is receiving tuition
support and a summer living stipend for those outside the Portland area.

Current consortium members include: Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon and
Washington.

We are just in the initial stages of development, with many of the
details to be worked out, however, you will be hearing more about us in
the future. We are here to help alleviate the current critical shortage
of teachers and to assure a continued supply in the years to come.

We welcome Terri Thurston at Washington Sensory Disability Serves (WSDS)
as the consortium liaison for the coming year.
