Agency Profile:  The mission of the Washington State School for the Blind is to provide specialized quality educational services to visually impaired/blind youth ages birth-21 within the state of Washington.  Our purpose is to serve as a statewide demonstration and resource center and provide direct/indirect services to students both on campus and in the children’s local communities. Position Profile:  The Washington State School for the Blind currently has a full-time Residential Life Counselor (RLC) position open.  This position provides training, counseling and guidance to Washington State School for the Blind students for the purpose of facilitating student independence and success.  The successful candidate will be scheduled to work on a career seasonal basis (during the WA State School for the Blind school year) and, under the direction of the Associate Principal of Evening and After-School Programs, this employee will perform the following duties, including but not limited to

 

Provide safe, nurturing care and may serve as an advocate for students;
Develop and implement programming to meet physical, intellectual, emotional and social development needs (such as assessments, IEP, behavior management and intervention);
Incorporate and use principles of orientation and mobility in all aspects of student care;
Assess situations regarding student behavior; recommend programming, discipline or crisis intervention as needed;
Monitor, counsel and assist students with their daily schedule and routine duties in an effort to facilitate student self-sufficiency;
Assist students with school work and offer general advice as necessary;
Provide regular communication to supervisor and co-workers regarding student related activities, behaviors and progress;
Maintain ongoing communication with parents, staff, community and organizations;
Document and maintain student and staff reports, records and communications;
Provide Daily Living Skills instruction;
Supervise meals; assist and instruct students in food preparation, table setting and proper manners;
Assist students in personal laundry and light housekeeping as needed;
May be required to assist students with personal hygiene and toileting;
May be required to lift or move students with or without reasonable accommodation;
Provide assistance with transportation, supervision and interact with students during on- or off-campus recreational activities or appointments as necessary;
Perform monitoring duties on the long distance Sunday bus run.
 
Required Qualifications
 

Valid state ID or driver’s license and minimum age of 18;
Two years of college with major emphasis in education, child development, or related subject; AND one year of experience working in instructional setting with children; OR equivalent education/experience
Basic Microsoft Office software skills;
Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times;
Ability to explain sometimes complex or technical information regarding rules, rights, regulations, policies, procedures, programs and services;
Ability to respond to difficult, stressful or sensitive interpersonal situations in ways that will reduce or minimize potential conflict;
Have or have the ability to obtain Braille certification;
Have or have the ability to obtain First Aid/CPR card and Food Handler’s card;
Willingness and abilities to work with students with physical and developmental disabilities;
Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time and ability to walk long distances, as necessary;
Ability to monitor students on long distance bus trips;
Ability to lift or assist students as necessary;
Willingness and ability to maintain good working relationships with staff, parents and students;
Must pass state and federal criminal background checks;
 
Desired Qualifications
 

Experience working with Blind or Visually Impaired people;
Braille certification;
Experience working in educational environment;
Bachelors degree in education, child development or related subject;
 
 
Compensation:  $22,338 to $28,917 DOE
 
Outstanding benefits including health, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance; vacation, sick, military and civil leave; dependent care assistance program; employee assistance program; deferred compensation plans; educational benefits program; 11 paid holidays; training; and state retirement plans.
Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee’s initial 30 days in this classification.
