Presentations on new transit smart card take place throughout the county

Snohomish County, Wash. - Traveling the Puget Sound region by bus, train and ferry is getting even easier this summer with the arrival of ORCA-One Regional Card for All.

The smart card-based electronic fare system was launched in April and will eventually replace about 300 various passes, tickets and transfers with a single card that works for all seven of the major public transportation agencies serving King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties.

ORCA is in a limited rollout phase but Community Transit will be out in the community teaching people how to get and use an ORCA card for the next several months. A schedule of Snohomish County ORCA presentations for the general public, for seniors and for bus riders is listed below.

ORCA will make rummaging for correct change a thing of the past. Transit riders can purchase a monthly pass to put on an ORCA card, or load funds in an "e-purse" and simply tap their ORCA card on the reader device to ride. All transfers or fare upgrades are calculated automatically.

The seven ORCA partners are Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro Transit, Kitsap Transit, Pierce Transit, Sound Transit and Washington State Ferries. Together, these agencies serve more than half of Washington's population and carry about 500,000 riders daily.

For more information about ORCA, visit www.orcacard.com or call 1-888-988-6722 (ORCA) or TTY Relay: 711, 888-889-6368. Community Transit has ORCA information on its website at www.communitytransit.org/orca.

Community Transit works in partnership with other transit agencies and municipalities to help commuters think transit first. The agency has partnered with six other transportation agencies to develop the ORCA smart card fare system, and in 2007 signed an historic agreement with the city of Everett to collaborate on Swift, the region's first bus rapid transit line.
