For those interested, below is a link for an opening at the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center, in Austin, TX., for a technology instructor position. Note that the closing date is this Friday, July 11. Though the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center is a state training center, they base many of their philosophies and training methods on NFB-developed methods, such as nonvisual training, use of sleep shades or blindfolds during training hours, and Braille competency. Those interested should follow the procedures for applying to this job described on the page provided. Two quick notes; first, there's no relocation assistance. Second, if you get the job, you will have to go through various agency specific training classes/programs, such as 6 weeks of blindfold training. If you have some vision, this means you'll have to wear a blindfold. Good luck. https://rm.accesshr.hhsc.state.tx.us/ENG/careerportal/Job_Profile.cfm?szOrderID=96219&szReturnToSearch=1&&szWordsToHighlight=technology Sincerely, Wayne Merritt From vionlinestudy at gmail.com Mon Jul 7 10:37:52 2008 From: vionlinestudy at gmail.com (Amy McKenzie) Date: Mon, 7 Jul 2008 11:37:52 -0400 Subject: [Trainer-talk] Your Participation is Requested Message-ID: <3b797cf40807070837h36771a22qea68cfb837061490@mail.gmail.com> Dear Listserv Members, Drs. Software Enhances Web Accessibility for the Blind Message-ID: This is an interesting idea. While all our problems on the web aren't caused by unlabeled items, some of them are, and this takes a distributed social approach to solving the problem. Dave July 8, 2008 I.B.M. Software Enhances Web Accessibility for the Blind By MARTYN WILLIAMS, IDG News Service\Tokyo Bureau, IDG IBM launched on Tuesday an application that seeks to harness the power and time of Internet users around the globe to make the Web more accessible to the visually impaired. Many blind or partially sighted users run screen reading software that describes the content of a Web page but often encounter problems. The screen readers rely on text or descriptive tags to explain the items on a page but these are often added as an after thought or are incomplete. Using the new IBM software users can report these problems to a central database and ask for additional descriptive text to be added to a site. Other Internet users that want to contribute can then check the database, select one of the submitted problems and "start fixing it" by added text labels. The additional information isn't incorporated into the original site's HTML code but into a metadata file that is loaded each time a visually impaired user subsequently visits the site. "This idea came from my own experience with inaccessible Web sites," said Chieko Asakawa, a researcher at IBM in Tokyo who led a six-person team on development of the software. Asakawa is blind herself so knows well the problems of navigating the Web and its increasing rich multimedia pages. "As users we face a lot of problems everyday but currently we don't have any mechanism to report what we have found. Every day we find images without alternative text (the text description of an image that usually accompanies it in the HTML code) but there is no way for me to say 'I want to have a description for this image.' It's a simple motivation but if we can report this kind of problem without difficulty and have it easily understood by sighted people I think it's going to be great." IBM began offering the software from Tuesday as a beta release through its AlphaWorks Web site. The software for blind or partially sighted users runs with Internet Explorer and the "Jaws" screen reader while the software for supporters of the project is available as a plug-in for Firefox. It runs in English or Japanese. Demonstrating the system, Asakawa typed in the address for the White House Web site and soon found problems. While the site appears to have been designed with accessibility in mind, the headings at the top of the three main columns had no data attached that would allow her screen-reading software to make sense of what they were. A couple of key presses brought up a box into which Asakawa typed her request for headings, which was then entered into the database. Upon finding the request, a user could enter the desired headings quickly and, later when checked again, the navigation was made a little easier with the additional metadata. Looking ahead, Asakawa said she hopes the project will be expanded to help users with other disabilities including those who are deaf, hard of hearing or have motor disabilities. "We started from a small group but to make this project successful and to make information accessible we really need to collaborate with the community," she said. "Our goal is to expand the applicability of this project." Copyright 2008 IDG News Service. All Rights Reserved. We had worked tirelessly to increase funding in this bill for the Talking Books program conversion from analog cassette technology to the new digital format. When the President's budget was originally presented to Congress in February, only $12.5 million was included for this transition; this was the same amount provided in the fiscal year 2008 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill. Funding this conversion program at $12.5 million per year would mean that it would take six years to complete. We learned that a six-year plan would cause a drastic reduction in service, and together, we Federationists worked to educate members of the House of Representatives on the dangers of a six-year plan. Because of the work of the National Federation of the Blind, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch included an appropriation of $34.5 million. Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Ranking Member Tom Latham of Iowa pledged to complete the funding for the digital conversion in three years, rather than the original four-year plan or the devastating six-year plan proposed at the beginning of this year. While this was a great victory, there is still a great deal of work to do. The Senate Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch will markup their version of this bill in the next week or two. This subcommittee is chaired by Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and is the Senate counterpart of Debbie Wasserman Schultz's subcommittee in the House. All of us need to contact Senator Landrieu's office at (202) 224-5824, and ask her to retain the $34.5 million for the digital Talking Book program that is in the House bill. Tell her how important the Talking Book program is to you and to all blind Americans. Senators Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Dick Durban of Illinois, and Wayne Allard of Colorado are also members of this subcommittee, so those of you who live in their states should call their offices with the same request. Their telephone numbers are listed below. You can, of course, always call the Capital switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to any senate office. I am asking that all NFB members contact Senator Landrieu's office and that the members in Illinois, Tennessee, Colorado, and Nebraska contact their respective senators serving on the subcommittee, by noon on Tuesday, July 15. Be sure to ask the senator to "maintain the $34.5 million funding level included in the House Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill for the digital Talking Book conversion in the Senate Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill." Please let me know if you have any questions about this critically important matter. I know that if we all work together, we will secure funding for the digital Talking Book program in the Senate and insure that an appropriation in the amount of $34.5 million goes to the President. Thank you for all of your outstanding work so far and for your continued assistance in securing the future of the Talking Book program. Sincerely, Jesse M. I realize that more and more, there are captcha systems just about everywhere. People say, "Use the audio feature." I do, but the Craigslist is very unclear and beyond distorted. Also, it's almost as if it intentionally says other things so as to add to the distortion. I can get a sighted person, but frankly, I live alone, and I don't want to call someone to come and type a few distorted sounding didgets or weird looking words just so that I can do something as simple as post an ad. Is the NFB involved with trying to do something about Captchas in general? Do others have trouble with other sites, and if so, what do you do about that? If nothing, then is it about time we maybe look into this issue? I don't know. I've just felt that lately, I've had more trouble than in the past, and I'm getting somewhat frustrated. Thanks. I found that my profile was corrupted. You can create a new one. To create a new profile, follow these steps: 1. Close Firefox completely 2. Open the run dialog (WINDOWS KEY-R) and type firefox -p (firefox followed by -p (Dash)P 3. This opens the firefox profile dialog 4. Activate the "Create Profile" button 5. This opens the profile wizard. Activate the next button 6. On the next screen input a profile name (10 letters or less) and activate the next button (don't choose a folder, let Firefox select the default) This will return you to the profile window. There is a checkbox that you can check later labeled (don't ask at startup. For now, you want Firefox to ask so you can test your new profile and see if you experience the same problems. When you start Firefox, you will be asked for the profile you'd like to use. Select the new profile and see if you experience the same problem. If the problem is resolved, you can check the "don't ask at startup" option in the profile selection dialog and the last selected profile will become your default. You will need to re-install your extensions such as web visum. I hope this resolves your issues. ----- CathyAnne Murtha Online Access Technology Trainer Join the ATI Announcement list. After four attempts, I finally got Web Visum to solve the captcha. Using Jaws for Windows, I got several instances where the captcha was solved incorrectly. It took five tries to get it solved correctly. I was confused by this and asked my boyfriend to come look at the captcha and the text I input. He said that a space was added to the captcha making it two words. When the words were jumbled letters or words that didn't make a lot of sense, Web Visum make it a regular text string. I enable pop and imap. I know her messages are getting to her imbox on the web, and with some tweeking, I can get Outlook to pick them up. I just need for this to be an automatic thing. The trick is to select one computer that will delete the messages from the server and set the others to leave copies of the messages on the server. I have two computers as well. One leaves a copy on the server so when I download from my main computer, I have them removed. This is important because if both computers wipe the messages, you will run into the problem you're describing. On the computer she'd merely like to review the messages (and not delete them) 1. Open the Email Account Settings for Gmail 2. Activate the "More Settings" Option 3. Locate the checkbox labeled "Leave a copy of messages on the server" 4. Save the changes and exit the email settings. You said everything was downloading fine to her 2003 Outlook. Is she using 2003 Outlook on the second computer as well? If not, you will want to check the port numbers used for the incoming and outgoing servers. I've noticed they are different depending upon the version of Outlook being used. The Gmail site has information on the settings for each version of Outlook. I hope this helps resolve the problem. ----- CathyAnne Murtha Online Access Technology Trainer Join the ATI Announcement list.?
