"Cooking Without Looking," the first TV show for people who are
blind/visually impaired, is shooting on location at the Center for the
Visually Impaired in Daytona Beach, FL, Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 11a.m. and will
feature the center on a future show.
The CVI Transition Program, now a year-round program, is designed to
transition teenagers from childhood dependence on parents to maximized
independence as contributing adult members of society. During the school
year the curriculum goals are met through weekly individual and small group
instruction, as well as weekend workshops and field trips to places like
Wekiawa Springs State
Park, and Bush Gardens Worlds of Adventure.
In summer, the Transition Program swings into high gear with full-day
events, occurring at least three times a week, replacing the individual and
small group instruction. During this time Transition Students also
participate in a paid "employment experience" to gain practical job skills
and confidence to engage the real-world.
Kayleigh Holt, a graduate of the program, will prepare her recipe for Milk
Chocolate Bubble Rings:
Sabrina Deaton of the National Federation of the Blind Newsline will also
prepare one of her favorite dishes.
"We're all very excited to be on location at CVI in Daytona Beach," says
Ren 'ee Rentmeester, Creator/Executive Producer of "Cooking Without
Looking."
"It's tremendous to see the accomplishments of these young people."
"Cooking Without Looking" is hosted by Celia Chacon, Allen Preston and
Annette Watkins who are all blind/visually impaired.
On each show, a blind/visually impaired guest "chef" creates their favorite
dish while demonstrating cooking techniques to help visually challenged
people have fun and stay safe in the kitchen. A third segment, "Food for
Thought " introduces audience members to people who provide services to the
visually
impaired.
Nova Southeastern School of Optometry, the Florida Division of Blind
Services, and the NFB Newsline underwrite the show.
Now in its second season, "Cooking Without Looking" airs on WXEL-TV42 PBS in
South Florida, Wednesday evenings at 7:30p.m. and premieres on the first
Saturday and Sunday of the month at noon.
"Cooking Without Looking" is a production of Vision World Foundation,
