[Reader-users] A Few Questions About Starting The Reader

Hello, List!

My Reader arrived yesterday and I immediately phoned my dealer to let him
know it had arrived. He was unavailable, so I left a message and have not
yet received a return call.

. I have been unable to get any reaction whatever from my Reader, no matter
what key I press. . As
the dealer appears to be away, I am on my own for the present.

I am wondering whether the problem might be that my flashcard has not been
installed. There is a card in the box, but I can't figure out just where to
insert it. I have listened thoroughly to the tutorial and checked the text
documents, but can't identify the openings and jacks. I certainly don't
want to do anything to damage the unit. Also, I am not using the unit as a
phone for the present time so I'm wondering whether I should connect it to
the computer and check to see whether the software has been installed. Of
course I plan to activate it, but I thought that non-activation allowed the
unit to function, albeit in a limited manner. Or, could my battery be just
plain dead?

I am also concerned I might have ever-so-slightly dislodged one of the
polarizer in an attempt to find the battery pack. The little piece of
plastic was not totally removed but I did notice the sticky back. Having
said that, I have done my level best to make sure I aligned the loose,
sticky portion as carefully as possible. The alignment seems fine to me,
but with all
this discussion of the polarizers I figure I'll try to read, then if I have
a problem <or even if I don't> I'll print out the polarizer instruction
guide and have a sighted friend check my handiwork as soon as possible. As
contact with sightlings in our immediate household on a regular basis is
rather infrequent, I'm hoping I get good reads before I have to have it
checked. Of course we can call someone; but we have no idea what friends'
schedules are, and our neighbors, either elderly or just not computer savvy,
might
make a big mess with this one. <smile>

I would appreciate any information listers may have to help me on my way.
Meanwhile, I'll keep working with the keys and looking for something I might
have missed in the documentation.

Many thanks in advance.

Pam
