ok people! It was a bad setting in the phone, not a defect!
Sorry to clutter the list but it took calls to att wireless, nokia and
handytech to find the problem -- apparently deep in the phone settings is a
network protocol, GSM or something else, and my phone was not set on GSM as
it should have been.
Once I changed it to gsm, suddenly I had 3 and 4 bars of signal and all is
working now.
I'm dancing on the ceiling...
Have a great day.
(Still loving this phone!)

Subject: [Reader-users] defective phone or wrong setting???
Hi all --
I've been on a family trip cross country and my lovely new N82 stopped
working for phone calls the minute we crossed the state line into North
Carolina. It shows signal 0 bars and the network says 3g, whatever that is.
It worked intermittently on the drive down here, but seldom had more than 2
bars strengh of signal. In fact, this phone has never shown more than a few
bars for the signal.
The upshot is I'm stuck with a nonworking phone. I tried calling AT&T
wireless(my provider), and nokia, both of whome thought it must be a defect
in the phone. I've been very careful to keep the phone protected -- even
bought a purse with a special case for a cell phone. HandyTech who I bought
the phone from sent me a case but I didn't receive it before we left.
If there isn't a phone defect causing this, I am wondering if I could have
flipped a setting trying to use wayfinder access. I have been through the
phone settings over and over and can't find what is wrong.
If anyone has ideas I'm all ears. Oh, HandyTech suggested putting in a
different sim card whic I haven't tried yet. I have rebooted and am at a
loss.
Any help really gratefully welcome!
Thx
