Actually, you can leave the camera battery in for many hours.  It won't 
hurt.  I've had mine plugged in for 24 hours, because I forgot it the next 
morning.  But, I generally leave it plugged in overnight.

I've left my camera battery plugged in for more than two hours and nothing
happened.  I doubt that you did any damage.
