Hi all -- I thought I'd report a bug in the mobile reader as well as make
some other comments. I still love this thing, but today's activities
yielded 2 problems:
First, I tried reading the directions on a medicine bottle and while the
reader did read some of the text, it completely missed the part giving
dosage instructions. I know that prescription bottles are small and curved,
so I didn't expect it to read the whole label at once, but I asked a family
member to describe the location of what I was looking for and she said the
text that was not read was lighter and slightly larger than the bolder text
giving the address of the pharmacy. The reader read the address but not the
directions stamped on the label. Since I traded in my classic reader I was
not able to compare its behavior, but as I remember, when I read similar
bottles with the classic reader, it worked quite well.
Second, I bought some shampoo and conditioner that came in identical
bottles, and I tried using the reader to distinguish which was which. It
read the ingredients but not the title. I asked a sighted family member to
describe the print on the bottle, as I thought the title might be written in
cursive or a different size or something unscannable. However, the opposite
was true -- apparently the label was hot pink with white lettering
describing the ingredients, and the word "conditioner" was in black
lettering amid the white text. Same with the shampoo bottle. The text was
bold and blocked and all the same size. I am glad the reader handled the
white on pink text, but I think it should also read words in a different
color on the same background, even if they are mixed.
Cheers and happy reading all.
