[Reader-users] facts about the knfb Reader Mobile

Many thanks Lorraine,

I have since found the costs here in the UK and they are substantially higher. I have npt been able to trak down whether there is a trade-in deal here but I suspect not.

My other question was could I run the software on my N70 which already runs Talx but again, from your reposted emails, it would seem not.

It looks as if I am stuck with theold machine for some time. I sppose one advantage is that the battery charge will last longer than on the phone. I am constantly charging my N70 even for normal use.

TO GRAHAM LEWIS, UK

Dear Mr. Lewis,

I work at NFB HQ in Baltimore, Maryland, and I read the READER-USERS listserv. Looks like you are recently on the listserv so I thought you'd like to read two emails that quickly explain the basics about the knfbReader Mobile all in one place. I do not post on the listserv as it is not part of my duties here at the National Center for the Blind (a.k.a. NFB HQ). A third email at the bottom is a sort of price list for the various parts (in US dollars of course).

Cordially,

Lorraine Rovig

Question: Can I use the NokiaN82 cell phone only as a reader and save some money?

Dear Ed,

Yes, it can be both, but does not have to be both. It is a sort of piecemeal approach to technology. You can purchase the machine and the reading software. You can purchase the calling plan and software to give a voice to all the cell phone functions. You can add GPS software. You can have all of these features on the one machine or only use the machine as a cell phone or only as a reading machine. To learn a lot more about the cost and function, I suggest you sign up for the listserv about it. It is called <Reader-Users> and you will find it on the NFB's long, long list of various listservs. Go to www.nfbnet.org <outbind://102/www.nfbnet.org> to locate this listserv. You can read the archive without signing up for the emails, if you prefer.

Here (below my note) is one email about the device that was sent to the listserv by Karl Smith of Utah, a blind vendor who is trained and authorized by the KNFB READING TECHNOLOGY, INC., to sell the knfbReader Mobile and the knfb Reader Classic (the first model for a portable talking reading machine, that is now 3 years old). Karl is only authorized to sell the Reader in Utah and 2 other Western states. Each dealer has a territory. You can find your authorized dealer by going to:

http://www.knfbreader.com/, and clicking on HOW TO PURCHASE, then finding your state on the pull-down box.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Re: [Reader-users] N82 Availability

First, everything is contained in the cell phone. This entire unit is 4.5 inches tall, 2 inches wide and 1/2 inches thick. It weighs 4 ounces. The camera and cell phone features can be used the same way they would be if the reader software wasn't present. This means there is only one battery as well. The reader software is operated with the keys on the cell phone.

As far as cell plans I really have no information about this. You can make your decisions in stages if you want. You can buy the reader first and use it only for a reader, then later when you are ready add the cell service.

As this is a GSM phone the only networks supporting it are AT&T and T-mobile. So far as I know neither of these companies sell this phone but the ones I sell are unlocked so they can be activated by simply adding a SIM card from either carrier.

For more information on plans go to: www.att.com <outbind://102/www.att.com> or www.tmobile.com <outbind://102/www.tmobile.com> .

The total price of the reader is $2,195.00 which includes the phone, KNFB reader software, and installation and configuration. $600.00 of the above price is the phone. If you find the phone elsewhere at a better price you can purchase it but you will have to send it to me [that is, your own dealer] to be configured and to have the polarizers installed. There is a $50.00 charge for this service. This way you would pay $1,595.00 for the software and $50.00 for the installation.

HTH.
