Is this option possible to add on even if you are using the pay as you go or
otherwise called pre paid plan??

You are correct about Wayfinder using a data connection on your phone to
access the Internet.

If you are considering AT&T, I recommend the MediaNet Unlimited plan,
roughly $20 per month, which gives you unlimited data downloads on your
phone and would alleviate any fears of running up lots of charges on your
line.

BTW, if you happen to be a college student or faculty or work for many major
companies, AT&T and other companies offer discounts on your monthly plan.
For me, I simply entered my university Email address into a form to get my
discount. This is even possible to add to your account if you are already a
customer.
