The sim card contains the interface to the phone network and some additional 
memory to save data on as well. You need a sim card to use your phone as a 
cell phone.  You get the sim card from your phone service provider.
This is separate from the phone memory which is builtin memory and the 
memory card/multimedia card, which is for your add-on applications.
You may need the sim card in order to operate the phone, and the phone 
memory is built in, but the phone can operate well without the memory card.
Hmm.  I'd be surprised if that answered your question as it all sounds like 
a jumble, but the thing to remember is that sim card and memory card are 
removable and you insert those yourself when you get the phone, but the 
phone mem is builtin.

Not sure if it's 100% relevant to networking wherever you are, but if
the phone has Talks on it, press the key combo that'll tell you the
battery/signal levels.

On my Nokia 6680, that's the Talks hotkey, and the P2 key which is
slightly to the right of the scrolling/select key.

I think that some networks might actually need to 'activate' the handset
to use that SIM card as well, but like I said, depends on where you are.
