all: the polarizers are absolutely essential to read print on a glossy background.  if you could see the image you would see a very large white splotch in the middle of the text which distorts the reading quality.  we consider the polarizers to be absolutely necessary for good quality.  not using them will mean that the reading results will be much less than optimal and would cause our customers to be dissatisfied with the product they have purchased.  we can not support failures in performance when the polarizers are not being used at the customer's option.

Charlie,

It does help in certain situations, where lighting is not necessarily 
optimal so if you get a chance to do it, it's certainly worth it. I to used 
mine without them for a time and was impressed.
