Not sure if it's 100% relevant to networking wherever you are, but if the 
phone has Talks on it, press the key combo that'll tell you the 
battery/signal levels.

On my Nokia 6680, that's the Talks hotkey, and the P2 key which is slightly 
to the right of the scrolling/select key.

I think that some networks might actually need to 'activate' the handset to 
use that SIM card as well, but like I said, depends on where you are.
