I'm reading mail backwards today, so just saw this message.  

Evelyn, Karl is correct.  You can use any pointed object.  You might want to
pick up a couple of these special styli just to keep one or more with you in
case you're away from home   and the camera needs re-calibrating, but you
can certainly get by without it.
