[Reader-users] Reader Text Files

Hi Graham:

Please send me an email off this list and attach sample files. It would
help the most if you could take a picture of a document and then attach
the appropriate files taken from Reader Documents, Reader images, and
Reader text files. These three files should allow us to replicate the
situation. It would be best if the files you send produce a reasonably
good quality result when you listen to the speech on the Reader.

Please send the files to <jgashel at nfb.org> Please also send me an
entirely separate email message to let me know the files have been sent.
This way I will hope not to miss anything coming through, just in case
the attachments on your other message end up being too large. This
shouldn't be much of a problem with one image file and two text files,
but it will help to alert me just in case. We definitely want to help
you get to the bottom of this.

Incidentally, I assume the files on the Reader you have are being stored
on an SD (secure digital) card, rather than a CompactFlash card. Is
that correct? Please confirm this.

Yes I know all this! It is ion the documentation and several people
have told it to me again. But this is not what is happening! The text
giles are there alright but do not contain the text of the scanned
documents.

Hi Graham:

There is a reader text file which corresponds to each reader document
file you save. These files are on your storage card. If you can read a
saved document on the reader under reader documents, that same file will
be in a text file under the reader text files directory. The date and
number sequence are the same under reader documents as they are under
reader text files.

On the reader itself you can only access the reader documents, reader
images, and reader voice notes directories. If you put the storage card
into your PC, you should also see the reader text files directory.
There is definitely a problem if you can read a file perfectly well on
the reader under the reader documents directory, but the corresponding
file under reader text files only has a few strange characters in it.
You could certainly try re-installing the software. Also, please be
sure to consult with the dealer who sold you the Reader.

Mike,
Yes they are but these files, although correctly named and dated
and with the txt extension, do not contain readable text versions of the
cirresponding reader document files.

When I look at them in a text file reader I just see three or four
random looking characters.

Graham:

The files in text form are in their own top-level directory, known,
originally-enough, as "Text Files" or some such.

Just got my new Kurzweil reader and all is well except that the Reader
Text files are not plain text files.

I was told when the devoie was sold to me that this should happen
automatically and so I could then transfer the catured pages to other
devices.

Is there a setting or something I failed to set or is this a feature?
