One correction. The readers distributed from KESI are also at version
3.1.5.

Hello. This is Steven Booth National Federation of the Blind KNFB
Reader Technical Support.
For those of you who are not sure of where your Reader support is located
check your serial number located in print and Braille on the inside of the
Velcro cover. If the serial number begins with a zero your Reader is one of
the NFB units and your technical and software support is from the National
Federation of the Blind. We are selling the first 500 units we used for
beta testing. The most recent software version for our units is 3.1.5. If
you have one of our units and do not have version 3.1.5 contact either Jim
Gashel jgashel at nfb.org or Ann-Marie Laney alaney at nfb.org indicating your
serial number and what version of the software you currently have.
If your serial number begins with a number other than zero your Reader
support is provided by Kurzweil Educational Systems. Contact KESI at
(800) 894-5374 for sales and software inquiries and for the name of your
local dealer and (888) 995-9905 for technical support. It is my
understanding that their latest version of the software is version 3.0.6 but
be sure to inquire from KESI what is the latest version of software.
Another way of telling what Reader you own is to look at the function keys.
If F1 F2 F3 and F4 are located along the same row from left to right you
have a National Federation of the Blind unit. If the function keys F1 and
F2 and F3 and F4 are in two vertical sets with F1 above F2 and F3 above F4
you have the KESI hardware.
The national Federation of the Blind will sell and support those earlier
units. Kurzweil Educational systems will support and sell the later units.
I hope this clears up some of the confusion. If you receive software
upgrades from the National Federation of the Blind return your SD card after
installing the upgrade. We use the returned SD cards to provide future
upgrades. The situation may differ for those units purchased from KESI
because they only have an SD card slot; your files are also stored on the SD
card and not a Compact Flash card which is present on the National
Federation of the Blind units.
Enjoy your Kurzweil National Federation of the Blind Readers and contact
either KESI or NFB for support.

Let me make sure I understand this correctly: Am I correct in
understanding that there are two companies who distribute the KNFB Reader-a
company called KESI and the NFB? There are two separate entities out there
distributing this product?
Kimberly
