Like with most MS products, you can do a "Save as" and choose the
standard .doc format. You don't have to save in the .docx format.

I just read the following in the newest issue of SLATE & STYLE, the
magazine
of the Writers' Division. It was written by the editor, Lorraine
Stayer.
Some of you may have gone to VISTA, or updated to Microsoft Office
2007 on
your PCs. A word of caution. The updated Microsoft Office has
changed the
format of the Word document, so that it can no longer be read by
previous
editions of the word processing program. The suffix is no longer
dot doc,
but dot docx-and that x at the end means that if you send us a
file, it can'
t be read. The solution is to save the document in the 2003
format,
something that you can do through the "Save as" in the file menu.
Can't do
it? Then send us hard copy through the mail.
That goes for me, too; I am using W98-SE and Office 2000. Ed
