Hi all,
I hope you enjoy this little tail (pun-intended) from Mambo's perspective. Enjoy!
Deanna and Mambo
My three brothers
My name is Mambo and I am a working Guide Dog for Deanna Lewis. I'm a male yellow lab who is 4 years old and we live in Cincinnati, OH. In the two years that my Mommy and I have been a team, we have had many adventures and have done a bit of travelling as well. We've been hiking, camping, attended weddings, a GDB Reunion, blindness Conventions and so much more. My favorite trips have been to places where I can meet new guide dogs and reunite with old friends!
During our travels, I have had the wonderful opportunity to reunite with three of my brothers; we were all littermates born to William and Mona on July 17, 2013. The first brother that I saw again was Moose. He and I both attended the 2015 Guide Dogs for the Blind Reunion in Portland, Oregon.
Last November, I had the chance to see my brother, Mateo who also lives in Ohio. Too bad that he lives at the opposite end of the state, so I am not able to see him regularly.
The most recent encounter with reuniting with one of my brothers was very serendipitous indeed!
My Mommy and I were visiting some friends in California in late July. We got to spend the whole day Sunday with my puppy raiser Karen, and the puppy she is currently raising; a few other puppy-raiser friends and another puppy in training came with us. We had a wonderful time at Muir Woods, hiking along a more rugged trail and enjoying the beautiful Redwood forest. I got to demonstrate my excellent guide work skills as we walked along the trails. After our hike, we stopped for a nice lunch and I had a nice rest.
Later in the afternoon, we visited a local beach, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. This was our last stop as we would be heading to the airport later that evening to fly home. I must admit, I am NOT a water dog! I've never been too fond of water, sure I will go kind of near it, but NEVER EVER will I set foot in it willingly. Mom tried to persuade me to come closer to the water, but I was not interested. I was much happier lying down on the beach towel next to her. Watching the waves from a distance was definitely more my style.
As we were relaxing and chatting on the beach, we spotted a yellow lab, which had a service dog vest on. We then overheard the handler call his dog, Milton... I have a brother named Milton, who graduated as a guide dog shortly before I did. He was retired after a short career as a guide dog, and went back to school to become a Diabetic Alert dog with Dogs for Diabetics. He successfully completed his training and was matched with Spenser, his new handler. And it just so happens that Spenser and Milton live in the San Francisco area...
Turns out that this Milton was my brother! The odds are astronomical that he and I would be both on the same beach at the same time??? How serendipitous is that?!? Milton and I got to say "hello" and get some pictures together. I wanted to share this story with you all because it was so exciting to see my brothers again and it was meant to be.
Now, we need to meet up with all of my other siblings! I can't wait for our next adventure... Stay tuned for Mambo's Adventures in Guiding!
