[Oagdu] Mambo and Pascal updates.

Hi Deanna, 

I was glad to hear an update about your boys! I sure hope that Mambo’s ears clear up and I know how hard it is to get those yeast infections under control. 

Concerning Pascal, you were wise not to put him on a lot of arthritis medicine until he really needed it. I am very glad the rimadyl alone with Cosaquin is working. . I know it is so frustrating for them when they don’t want to walk around any more. 

Around here, other than the little dog who is the kids pet, we haven’t had too much happen. I have to watch the hair that grows in Ginger’s ears so we stop at the vet after every grooming. I am going to have her next grooming done professionally so that her toenails, hair in the ears and her anal glands can all be done along with the grooming. It is pricey, but sometimes, it is worth the extra money to prevent problems in the long term.

Hi all,

I feel like we’ve been to the Vet a lot over the past few months. The boys went in for their annual wellness exams in mid-June. At that time, they noticed that Mambo had a pretty yucky yeast infection in his ear. So, his vet prescribed an ear cleaner and ointment. He went back about 3 weeks later, and it looked better, but still wasn’t cleared up. So, she did a pretty thorough cleaning and we continued the treatment and went back in 2 more weeks. It still had not cleared up, and it seemed to be hurting him more now (he would cry out when I cleaned his ear). He’s always hated for anyone to touch his ears, even before the infection, so he really has been a trooper and handling it fairly well! At his last visit, the vet gave me a new cleaner and also put him on a steroid and antihistamine pill. We started this pill on Tuesday, the 26th. He didn’t seem to be having as much pain, but he was acting kind of dopey and lethargic. And as she had warned, was peeing huge amounts. We didn’t do a lot of walking that week, just mainly inside buildings, but I could tell he didn’t feel well and was pretty tired. On Friday, we walked to a nearby restaurant to meet my friend for lunch. I noticed almost at once that he was still kind of out of it, and not paying as much attention. After the first lousy crossing, I realized that this wasn’t going to work for him, so I whipped out my spare cane and just heeled Mambo. I called the Vet as soon as I got home that day and told her that the medicine was really making him loopy and asked what we could do. You can’t just stop steroids so we discussed weaning him off of it sooner. He was originally scheduled to finish it by Friday, the 12th. But, with the way he was acting, I couldn’t rely on him to guide when we travel to the GDB Alumni Association Board Meeting on August 11th. So, now that he is on two tablets once per day, I started to give it to him at night, and it’s made a great deal of difference. His work was back to usual on Saturday. He goes down to one tablet once a day this Friday, so I think he’ll be all set by the time of the trip. I’ll have to take his last few doses with me, but that shouldn’t be an issue. I’m going to follow-up with his Vet this morning and see what she says. 

And now for Pascal’s update. He is doing so well on the combination of Cosaquin and Rimadyl. He’s been on the Rimadyl for 3 weeks now, and is moving around so much better, not limping much at all. He also seems happier, has more energy and is more playful. I’m going to talk to GDB today about hopefully getting another month supply. Right now he is on it twice per day, but we should be able to decrease that after a while. I’m so happy to see this positive change in him.  

Well, that’s our long update for now. Hope everyone else is doing well, and that your dog’s are staying out of the Vet’s office! LOL
