Hi everyone,

My name is Jordan, and I’m based in the DFW area. I recently graduated from Tarleton State University (2023) with a degree in sociology, and I’m currently exploring alternative certification programs with the long-term goal of becoming a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI).

I’m also totally blind myself, so I’m especially interested in hearing from others who have experience teaching while blind or working in visual impairment.

Since I’m just getting started, I would really appreciate any guidance on what a strong path forward looks like. Specifically:
•     Whether it’s better to start in general education or special education before pursuing a TVI certification
      •     Recommendations for alternative certification programs (especially those that are accessible and supportive)
      •     Skills or experiences I should focus on early to set myself up for success
      •     Any insight into the day-to-day realities of the job, particularly as a blind educator I’m open to any advice, suggestions, or resources you’d recommend. I appreciate your time and am grateful for any guidance you’re willing to share.

I’d also be happy to connect one-on-one if anyone is open to a quick call or email exchange.

Best regards,
Jordan

Best regards: Jordan
