No time to read? Listen to our latest podcast episode. You can now explore an interactive map of the service improvements included in Proposition 1. Compare your current route with proposed changes, see proposed new routes and seasonal trolleys, and explore how access to destinations like healthcare facilities, parks and schools could improve. If approved by voters, Proposition 1 would fund: * 47% more local transit service * More frequent service, with 86% of routes running more often * Longer and later service, with 80% of service operating for more hours * An 83% increase in weekend service * New routes connecting communities across the Pierce Transit service area * Fare-free rides for seniors age 65 and older on Pierce Transit buses and SHUTTLE * Expanded paratransit service including later hours and new areas * Special event service to help people get to and from community events * Seasonal trolley service connecting people to popular waterfront destinations * Expanded connections to major destinations and future light rail stations Proposition 1 would be funded by changing Pierce Transit’s local sales tax rate from 0.6% to 0.9% — an increase of 3 cents on a $10 taxable purchase. Intercity Transit's official app, Transit, now displays detours when the app detects missed stops on any route. Riders can now see when their bus is on detour, and where bus stops have been relocated to accommodate construction and other disruptions. This also allows the app's trip planning features to reflect the most accurate route options. This feature is available as part of Intercity Transit's partnership with Transit. As a reminder, all Transit users in our service area get upgraded to Transit Royale for free. _____ Nightline Service is Back Nightline returns on Friday, Oct. 2 for easy, late-night service between The Evergreen State College and west Olympia to downtown Olympia. Enjoy the late-night, zero fare Nightline during these seasons: * Fall: Oct. 2 to Dec. 19. * Winter: Jan. 8 to March 20. * Spring: April 2 to June 12. _____ Real-Time Signage Installation Complete at OTC Intercity Transit's real time signage project is now complete, although we are still making adjustments. The signs allow riders at the Olympia Transit Center to access real-time departure information at all bays. Each bay includes a digital sign showing real-time departure times for routes that serve that bay. These signs also show if there are service alerts affecting those routes. All digital signs are fitted with push-to-talk buttons, allowing riders with low or no vision to hear the same real-time information. There are also two bay assignment kiosks in the transit center. These reflect which routes are assigned to which bays, as well as the next departure times for each bay. The Customer Service lobby features a digital sign showing all upcoming departures at all bays as well. In addition, there is an interactive kiosk in the transit center to allow customers to plan trips on the spot. This pilot project, funded in part by a Regional Mobility Grant from WSDOT's Public Transit Division, aims to improve customer access to real-time transit information and streamline communication between Intercity Transit and our customers. _____ Be Safe, Be Seen Fall is upon us. If you’re traveling after dark (or before light), give yourself a little extra time to move through lower-light conditions. Our drivers are skilled at spotting riders, but a small light or reflective gear can really help you stand out and be seen. Standing up as a bus approaches and waving a flashlight or your cell phone are also great options to increase visibility. Reflective clothing or lights also make you more visible to oncoming traffic, keeping you safer. As temperatures drop, layers also become your best friend, as weather can shift quickly this time of year. Be safe, be seen, stay aware, and Intercity Transit will keep you moving! _____ Safety Tips: Boarding the Bus * Always let other passengers get off the bus before you board. * Passengers can use both the front and rear doors to get on or off the bus. * As the bus approaches, signal the driver by standing and waving. If it's dark, consider wearing a light or reflective clothing or shining a flashlight. * Allow passengers using the wheelchair lift to board first. If you're using the lift, wait at least five feet from the door so the driver has room to lower the lift safely. * Please allow elderly and riders with disabilities to sit in the front seats. * For your own safety, please do not sleep on board. _____ October is Walk to School Month During the month of October, students and their families are encouraged to celebrate National Walk to School Month by walking, biking, or rolling to school. Getting to school using one of these active transportation options helps to: * Build community with neighbors. * Promote good health and activity. * Reduce road traffic and congestion. * Improve air quality around schools. If you are driving, help keep families safe by always following the speed limit of 20 miles per hour in school zones and stopping for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections. Walk N Roll partners with Olympia, Tumwater and North Thurston school districts to organize events throughout the year. Visit intercitytransit.com/services/walknroll/encouragement to see if your school is participating or email us at walknroll at intercitytransit.com to learn more. _____ Workshop: Using Intercity Transit for Work and Life Join us at WorkSource Thurston County on Oct. 26 for an in-person workshop designed for job seekers.
