We meet at the offices of KSQM Radio Station on W Washington St in Sequim. This month our program will be a ZOOM presentation by Peggy Chong of Colorado. She is known as the Blind History Lady. She gives presentations on what blind people have accomplished over the years. What she has found out about little known blind people is fun and informative. Many times hearing about how blind people have accomplished their life dreams under trying circumstances can be uplifting. If you have any questions or concerns you can contact me at 206-419-9555 or at cane.travel at gmail.com. Check out this information from the national office and call your members of the US house of representatives and your senators about the program for independence programs for seniors who are blind. Check out the legislative alert about this issue. /s/ Bennett Prows From: National Federation of the Blind Sent: Monday, May 11, 2026 3:03 AM To: Bennett Prows Subject: Legislative Alert: Independent Living Services for Older Individuals Increase Funding for the Independent Living Services for Older Individuals Who Are Blind Program The National Federation of the Blind, the transformative membership and advocacy organization of blind Americans, urges the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to vote to increase funding for the Independent Living Services for Older Individuals Who Are Blind (OIB) program. The OIB program is intended to provide support services for blind Americans over the age of 55 to reach their independent living goals. Critical aspects of OIB include orientation and mobility training, learning Braille, cooking, and training on access technology. How to Take Action * Read the full legislative alert for further details. * Call your representative and two senators. To find the contact information for your specific representative or senators' office, please use the attached House and Senate spreadsheets. * Email your representative and two senators and copy Jesse Shirek at jshirek at nfb.org Sample Script "My name is [YOUR NAME] and I want to urge [REPRESENTATIVE/SENATOR NAME] to support the Independent Living Services for Older Individuals Who Are Blind program by contacting Subcommittee Chair [ADERHOLT (in the House)/CAPITO (in the Senate)] to show support for an increase in funding. This program helps blind Americans over the age of 55 learn to live with their blindness through various forms of independent living training. The program is currently severely underfunded, allotting less than $10 per eligible individual per year." We suggest a subject like: "Help us increase independence for blind Americans in their golden years." I have some questions I have pertaining to how I might go about submitting an article to be included in the Braille Motitor. 1. Are there entrance fees I should be aware of? 2. Are there any other editorial considerations I should be aware of, besides being an NFB member and talking about blindness philosophy? 3. Is there a word count? 4. Do I actually need to be receiving the Braille monitor for this to work? I am being inspired by an experience I experienced during a conversation within my table mates while attending the NFBW Seattle Chapter meeting. Thanks! All you need to do is to write the article and send it to Chris Danielson, monitor editor. There are no fees. You don’t need to have subscribed, although reading the monitor is a good way to know what kind of articles are usually welcome. If you want, you can send an email query to Chris Danielson to ask if your topic is of interest. Even that is unnecessary, though, since he is more than delighted to accept unsolicited writing. Good luck. Not even knowing the topic of your article, the setting you describe makes me think I’ll be very interested to read it. We may use them in declarations, advocacy materials, public communications, and legal efforts related to health care access and digital accessibility. For background, a new HHS rule published in 2024 was intended to provide clearer protections, including requirements for accessible websites and mobile applications used by hospitals, clinics, insurers, and other entities that receive HHS funding. However, the Department of Health and Human Services has now delayed key digital accessibility compliance dates through an interim final rule. These delays have real effects on blind people and others with disabilities who need equal access to healthcare information, patient portals, forms, scheduling systems, and other essential services. The National Federation of the Blind is working to oppose this delay, and your personal story can help make the case. How to participate: Use one of the following options: - Submit your story in writing to story at nfb.org - Leave a voicemail at 410-659-9314, extension 2444 If you’ve been affected, please add your voice. Your experience helps show why timely, enforceable Section 504 protections and accessible health care systems matter.Thank you for helping us push for equal access to health care, health information, and other essential services.   _______________________________________________ NFBNet-Members-List mailing list NFBNet-Members-List at nfbnet.org List archives:  To unsubscribe from NFBNet-Members-List: goto http://nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nfbnet-members-list_nfbnet.org/mjc59%40comcast.net -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
