Good Afternoon!
It is our pleasure to announce that The Downtown Subarea Plan Public Draft is ready for your viewing pleasure <https://www.seattle.gov/opcd/regional-centers-planning/downtown?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery> here! We want to thank you again for your ongoing support and commitment to this work. The Downtown Subarea planning process began more than two years ago and has been shaped by the voices of thousands of stakeholders including all of you, as well as a team of technical experts from the transportation, environment and economics sectors and over a dozen internal City departments.
We very much look forward to receiving your feedback on this draft. To facilitate such, we’ve created a survey which will be available on the Downtown Subarea Planning website January 2nd. Having the survey open as you move through the document is likely the best way to ensure thoughts are appropriately captured.
The comment period will be officially open from January 2nd through February 2nd. We welcome you to begin reviewing now and share your feedback via the survey but if ywould like to submit an official comment letter, you can do so during the comment period to the <mailto:downtownplan at seattle.gov> downtownplan at seattle.gov email. We will be hosting a virtual informational session, which will include information about the plan and how to share your feedback, on January 21 at 4pm, so please mark your calendars (more information and link to be shared in early January).
After the public comment period, we will incorporate comments and produce a Final Draft Plan, which will be submitted to Seattle City Council, with the goal of Council adoption summer of 2026.
What Are Subarea Plans
The process of creating Subarea Plans is new to the City of Seattle and the Draft Downtown Plan is the first of these. The seven designated Regional Centers (as proposed in the mayor’s draft One Seattle Comprehensive Plan) include Downtown, Uptown, South Lake Union, Capitol Hill/First Hill, University District, and Northgate, and Ballard — are home to a significant share of Seattle’s residents and workers and expected to grow significantly over the next 20 years. For this reason, these areas require a more detailed degree of planning to ensure they meet the needs of those who live, play, and work within them as they adapt and change. The plans present a community vision for these areas and outline means of achieving that vision through land use, environmental, housing, economic, and transportation policies.
Thank you again and of course reach out to our Downtown Plan email account <mailto:downtownplan at seattle.gov> downtownplan at seattle.gov with any questions pertaining to the review process.
Happy Holidays,
Erica
