Law, Diversity & Justice Faculty Position Available:

Welcome to the Western Washington University on-line application process. Before you begin, please print out the job announcement; you may need to refer to it while completing the application.

Assistant Professor - Law, Diversity & JusticeAbout the Position: Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, Western Washington University, seeks a dedicated educator for the position of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) to teach in the college's Law, Diversity & Justice (LDJ) curriculum as well as the Fairhaven College Core Curriculum. The Law, Diversity & Justice curriculum is an interdisciplinary, undergraduate course of study for students who are interested in law, diversity and access to the legal system for under-served communities.

We seek candidates with a history of community participation and activism, who can teach academic theory in areas relating to rights, liberty, and justice in the U.S. The applicant must be able to inspire students and communities to recognize their own empowerment. Practical experience as a licensed attorney is preferred, with practice in any field where concepts such as power and privilege can be examined. Other areas of legal specialization could include (but are not required or limited to) Critical Race Theory or civil rights, as well as issues regarding Federal Indian Law, immigration law and migrant rights, and/or policing and incarceration.

About the College/Department: Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies is a liberal arts college of about 400 students within a university serving about 15,000 students. Instead of traditional letter grades, faculty write direct responses to student self-evaluations with narrative assessments at the end of the quarter (main campus classes still receive letter grades). Fairhaven cultivates student responsibility for designing and assessing learning through interdisciplinary inquiry, creativity, and scholarship. With an emphasis on justice, social and environmental responsibility, and cultural diversity, we challenge ourselves through active, innovative, and experiential learning to examine our choices, roles, and purposes in the world. It is our aim to engage and negotiate fairly with students, faculty and staff in a collegial, democratic setting that encourages the airing of diverse voices.

By offering mostly small seminars, we serve a wide range of students and communities, including students of color, queer students, students with disabilities, first-generation college students, returning students and members of other marginalized groups. We are striving to increase the representation of diverse students, staff and faculty at our college.

Our students also come from a wide range of academic backgrounds and opportunities for skill development, and the successful candidate should expect to work with students who are wrestling with basic writing skills alongside students who have had access to the best advanced academic preparation programs available. Responding to the various needs of our students is part of the excitement and challenge of teaching at Fairhaven. Position Responsibilities:
The LDJ curriculum emphasizes a critical examination of how issues such as race, class, gender, sexual orientation and disability intersect with the law. The ideal candidate will be able to teach students to understand, appreciate, critique and challenge American legal systems within a framework of social justice. The LDJ curriculum includes classes such as American Legal Systems; Rights, Liberties & Justice in America; Current Issues in the Law; and Advanced Topics in the Law (topics vary by quarter). The LDJ capstone course, Advanced Legal Writing and Analysis, requires students to write an appellate brief and argue in a Moot Court. In addition to teaching required and elective courses, the successful candidate will also sponsor independent study projects and co-supervise interdisciplinary concentrations (majors) in their fields of expertise.

Finally, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability and commitment to lead and promote the Center for Law, Diversity & Justice (LDJ), including recruiting and advising LDJ students, coordinating faculty members and curricular offerings, arranging extracurricular activities such as bringing in relevant speakers, and interacting with current and potential donors. The CLDJ director position is a rotating one. Required Qualifications:

  * J.D. or equivalent terminal graduate legal degree
  * Ability to teach required courses and electives in the Law, Diversity & Justice curriculum as well as the Fairhaven College Core Curriculum
  * Potential to publish academic articles or other creative or scholarly work for tenure at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, Western Washington University
  * Ability to direct the Center for Law, Diversity & Justice (CLDJ), including recruiting and advising students for the LDJ minor and concentration
  * Experience and demonstrated success working with diverse populations
  * Demonstrated community engagement (including a letter of recommendation from a community member about the applicant's engagement)
Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Interdisciplinary teaching experience
  * Experience practicing as a licensed attorney
