Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), medical services providers must provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services to patients with disabilities, as well as to companions with disabilities, in order to ensure effective communication with patients with disabilities. Examples of auxiliary aids and services include qualified sign language interpreters, communication access realtime translation services (CART), written notes, assistive listening devices, written and electronic materials, qualified readers, large print, and Braille.

This 90-minute webinar will assist participants in understanding the rights and responsibilities people with disabilities in medical settings with regard to effective communication. The emphasis will be on Title III of the ADA and private medical services providers. Discussion topics will include:

 * ADA Title III legislation overview and definitions of effective communication.
 * Importance of effective communication for people with disabilities in medical settings and consequences of poor access and oversight.
 * Provision of effective auxiliary aids and services to ensure effective communication
 * Communication strategies and other types of accommodations, such as environmental considerations and modifications to policies and procedures.
 *   Defining "undue burden."

Real-time Captioning will be available throughout the webinar.

Participants have the option of obtaining 1.5 CRCC credits or a Letter of Attendance.
