[nfbwatlk] FW: NFB stand on Blind Child Area signs?

There isn't quite the doctrinaire opposition to folding canes by most NFB
members these days as there was in the past, partly because folding and
telescoping canes have become much more robust and partly because are
message of the respectability of blindness is, believe it or not, becoming
much more widely accepted than it was even, say, twenty years ago. That's
not to say that people don't still try to hide their blindness but more and
more agencies -- even some of the "retrograde" agencies upon which we've
heaped opprobrium in the past -- are now beginning to push the notion that
hiding one's blindness isn't acceptable or practical. This means that use of
a folding cane (assuming it's long enough and substantial enough to be truly
useful) isn't necessarily a matter of hiding blindness but often is a matter
of practicality. For example, stuffing a folding cane into the seat pocket
in front of one on an airplane is a judicious way of avoiding hassles.

Having said this, though, there are always ways to handle a straight cane
smoothly and gracefully. It's a matter of practice and ingenuity.

Mike

Hi Becky, thanks for the folding cane tip. Lol. I have no
problem using the non-folding kind, it's just that being
primarily a dog handler I've chosen to have folding canes all
these years. But I can cope with the other kind. (Grin).
Hugs, Debby
