Subject: [nfbwatlk] Support group for the blind in Oak Harbor

Hi everyone,
I just had an interesting call from a woman here in Oak Harbor. She
was asking about products and software that could help her use her computer
and allow her to read books. Wwhile we were talking she told me about a
support group here. The reason I am writing about this is because am
wondering if anyone knows about this by any chance. She also said that
there were services for the elderly blind out of Bellingham and that they no
longer serve Island County. Does anyone know anything about this? I
understand that it is because of a budget cut, but I am wondering if this
service she mentioned is from DSB or some other agency.
She also said that because of arthritis she would like a program
like Dragon Naturally Speaking. Is this a good program for an elderly
person wanting to use it for emails, or is there something else that I don't
know of that could work better for her? I told her to be careful about
using Narrator even though it has been improved upon, but is there a
screen-reader program that is cheaper than JAWS that still works well?
I don't know if Dan Fry still gets emails from NFBwatalk, but I
would like his feedback. Also Linda please email me off list. Any other
comments for suggestions any of you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - Philip
