WSSB was formed in 1886, htree years before Washington became a state. It
then served both blind and deaf youth; the School for the blind and the
School for the Deaf became separate entities in 1906. The school was
initially known as the Washington State School for Defective Youth! People
look upon this with horror now but, frankly, I'm *proud* of my "defective"
heritage! (grin)
